CALL OF DUTYGAMES

COD: MODERN WARFARE 2, TRAILER

We're getting to the part of the year where rumors about the next COD: MODERN WARFARE 2 are running rampant. Vanguard came out as normal at the end of 2021, and now we know that Modern Warfare 2 will be the next one to come out.

We've gathered all the key details about the game here, so read on to find out everything you need to know about the upcoming COD.

Release date and title of CALL OF DUTY: MODERN WARFARE 2

For about six months it was strongly rumored that COD 2022 would be a sequel to 2019's Modern Warfare, and would most likely stick a "2" at the end of that game's title to bring back nostalgic memories of the original Modern Warfare 2.

In February 2022 it was officially confirmed, following an unusual move for the franchise: Infinity Ward informed the media of its plans not only for Modern Warfare 2, but also for a new version of Warzone that will arrive with it. You can read the key details in a community update which he later published.

In the absence of firm information on the release date of the game, we can say that the typical schedule of Call of Duty is that Modern Warfare 2 will go on sale early next year. November 2022. It is being developed primarily by Infinity Ward, but it seems that there are 10 other studies working in the game as support, although this type of resource sharing is nothing new in the series.

We're due for a reveal trailer fairly soon, after Infinity War unveiled the game's logo in late April 2022:

This was followed by a tiny teaser trailer that doesn't add much, but re-emphasizes the title and logo.

THE FUTURE OF FRANCHISING

Looking ahead, we've even seen hints that the game after this one will be a return to the Black Ops seriessuggesting that a familiar rotation of titles is occurring. However, a bombshell report from Bloomberg had indicated that it will not launch in 2023, leaving Modern Warfare 2 with a full two-year support cycle to enjoy.

This is great news for both the franchise and the game, as no title has ever gone two full years without a new competitor in over a decade. It will be interesting to see what plans Infinity Ward prepares to keep it fresh for so long.

CALL OF DUTY Platforms

Call of Duty is usually released on all platforms that can run it, to maximize sales, but everything changed in January 2021 when Xbox announced it was buying Activision, the publisher of the series.

The news has shocked the community, as it threatens the possibility of Call of Duty becoming a series exclusive to Xbox hardware on console at some point. While it's possible that could happen, it won't affect Modern Warfare 2.

MULTIPLATFORM

The game will be released before the deal is completed, and existing contracts with PlayStation mean that at least the next major COD due out in 2023 should also appear on PS4 and PS5. Microsoft has also stated that it intends to keep the franchise on PlayStation once those deals run out.

So you can be sure that Modern Warfare 2 will at least appear on Xbox, PlayStation and PC when it launches, even for older consoles.

CALL OF DUTY: MODERN WARFARE 2 story and setting

Allegedly codenamed Project Cortez, the game will feature a single-player campaign rumored to take place during the U.S.-led drug war in South America.

According to an additional report by Tom Henderson, the game will be even more gritty than Modern Warfare 2019, which already leaned toward realism more than Call of Duty for a while, with missions like Clean House featuring realistic room clearing and night vision.

Infinity Ward has been working on the game since it released Modern Warfare, which has given it a good three-year cycle to innovate, and the campaign will consequently see some nice additions like real narrative options and weapons that can sometimes get stuck in to really put you up the creek without a paddle.

MODERN WARFARE 2

Obviously, there will be a significant amount of continuity from the last Modern Warfare in terms of gameplay in Infinity Ward's next game, but that still leaves room for some improvements and additions.

We still expect the time to death to be low, making it a fairly hardcore shooter, but we'll be interested to see if it adopts some of the technical advances made by Vanguard.

For example, the World War II shooter presents much more destructibility in the maps and environments, as well as an expanded weapon mount system that allows you to move around more while still getting weapon control bonuses.

CALL OF DUTY CONTINUES

We think the latter will probably hold, but we're not sure about the environmental design, given how much cleaner and less cluttered many of Modern Warfare's maps are compared to other titles in Call of Duty.

On the other hand, Tom Henderson's extensive report says that the campaign will feature more advanced enemy AI that will react more to your gunfire and the wounds you inflict on them as they duck for cover. That sounds a bit grim in writing, but in motion it will probably just make you feel more immersed as you fight.

He has also said that the game will feature multiple maps remastered multiplayer component of the original Modern Warfare 2, which means we could return to legendary locations like Dust and Terminal.

COD: Modern Warfare 2 Warzone Integration

Following the disastrous integration of Black Ops Cold War in Warzone, with a recycled map and unbalanced weapons, Activision seems to be aware that it has to stick the landing better when it comes to new COD titles that blend into its free-to-play feel.

Vanguard brought with it a completely new mapCaldera, bringing the fight to the Pacific setting and finally putting a new location on the table and, by the looks of it, Modern Warfare 2 will try to make it an annual change.

WARZONE 2

According to their report to the community, Infinity Ward is building a new Warzone experience from the ground up with Modern Warfare 2, on a new engine that all COD games will henceforth share to avoid similar teething problems between their ecosystems.

The game will feature a new map, along with a new sandbox mode that we haven't heard much more about, and Infinity Ward sounds confident that it's going to shake up the shooter genre once again. Battle Royale with this new reimagining of Warzone.

Activision has said in recent job announcements that it sees the next step for the COD franchise as transitioning to its "2.0" status, and that means more connectivity between titles, apparently.

This is a good sign for gaming fans, who are only going to get more investment in the future.
